Countertops - Quartz, Marble and Granite

What’s the difference between quartz, marble and granite?

Quartz is a mineral made of silicon dioxide. It is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust. In engineered stone, used for countertops and backsplashes, quartz is the main ingredient. Resin is mixed with powered quartz and then made into slabs. It is resistant to scratches and can tolerate heat from pots and pans.

Marble is a rock that was formed over millions of years from another rock, meaning it is a metamorphic rock. The original rock was limestone from which marble came. It is a softer rock than granite, and stains and scratches easily if not sealed. It is the ideal surface for making pastry because of its coolness to the touch. Marble ranges in color from pure white to black.

Granite is a rock made up of several minerals including quartz, feldspar and plagioclase. It was formed in the magna deep within the earth meaning it is a igneous rock. Granite is very hard and durable and comes in many colors, some even with veins or clouds.
